Events,
Activities, and Information
TO
ALL SCOUTERS,
As we
settle into a new work week, let us do so with a renewed sense
of purpose and a greater commitment to making sure that
Scouting continues to be a viable opportunity for our youth.
The courage and determination of the youth at Little Sioux
Scout Ranch proved that “Be Prepared” is more than just a
motto.
While
everyone was touched by the devastation of the storm, Bob
Mazzuca traveled to Iowa and Nebraska to visit the injured and
to thank everyone for their support. He also gave the Spirit
of the Eagle Award to the families of the four young men who
died: Aaron Eilerts, 14, Eagle Grove, Iowa; Ben Petrzilka, 13;
Josh Fennen, 13; and Sam Thomsen, 13, all of Omaha,
Neb.
If you
would like to experience the visit through Bob’s eyes, go to
Bob’s blog, “Iowa Journal” which is available through
Mybsa.org. You can also share your thoughts on the
events of last week.
In
Scouting,
Wayne
Brock
Assistant
Chief Scout Executive
(Note:
The Greater Alabama Council has started a relief fund
for anyone who wishes to make a donation to help with the
recovery from this tragedy. Please make checks payable
to the Greater Alabama Council, and annotate that the funds
are for the Iowa Scout Fund. Click here for a memorial
article from the Omaha newspaper.)

FIRST POWDER HORN IN GREATER
ALABAMA COUNCIL A SUCCESS!

On March 28-30 and April 11-13, 2008, the
Greater Alabama Council conducted its first ever Powder
Horn. Forty three participants and another
29 rotated staff came out to experience high-adventure
possibilities first hand.
These first recipients of the Powder Horn
device took the challenge, and ideally have gone back to their
units with resources able to refresh their units, and engage
their youth.
The course itself took close to 2 years to
develop, and it showed through the high-caliber consultants
who came out to assist in the course.
A great thanks need to be paid to the
volunteer and professional staff involved in this first
effort. Happy Venturing~!
SUMMER CAMP UPDATE- The
following weeks are still available at Camps Comer and
Sequoyah: 29 June - 5 July, and 6-12 July
. If your troop is not yet signed up for
camp....what are you waiting for?
CAMP SEQUOYAH LEADERS GUIDE -
There has been a small change in the merit badge program at
Camp Sequoyah. The revised program, with changes in
bold, can be seen/downloaded by clicking here.
LEAVE NO TRACE MASTER COURSE -
The Greater Alabama Council will host a Leave No Trace Master
Educator course this fall over two weekends: October 24-26 at
Camp Jackson and November 14-17 at Camp Sequoyah. For
more information, or to register to attend, click here.
EAGLE APPLICATION CHANGE - The
new printing of the Eagle Scout Rank Application has a notable
change. As part of Requirement 5, the name of the
candidate's Eagle project is required, along with the grand
total of hours devoted to it (from page 10 of the Eagle Scout
Leadership Project Workbook). The new application form
is now required.
SUMMER CAMP 2009 - Yes, 2009! It is not
too early to start planning next summer's long-term camping
adventure. The cost for camp next summer will be $225
for Greater Alabama Council Scouts, and $250 for visiting
Scouts. However, two early-bird specials are available:
1) All troops that sign up for camp before or during the
fall camp kickoff in October will receive a $10 reduction per
Scout, and receive a special patch for each Scout.
(Troops that sign up while still at camp this summer will
receive a gold-bordered version of the patch.) 2.) In
addition, Troops that pay all camp registration fees by May
1st, 2009 will also receive a $10 savings per Scout.
Advance planning can save Troops (and parents) $ 20 per Scout
for 2009. Sign-up now to attend Camp Comer or Camp
Sequoyah in 2009.
PHILMONT 2009 CONTINGENT - Congratulations
to all youth who applied -- you have a position in the 2009
contingent! Adults who applied will receive confirmation
of their primary or standby status shortly. Since we
have exactly the number of youth necessary to fill our
contingent, and some attrition is inevitable, we will be
accepting stand-by applications soon.
NORTHERN TIER HIGH ADVENTURE BASE 2009 -
Reservations for 2009 Northern Tier trips are
open. For specific reservation procedures, click here. Space is
still available.
EAGLE PROJECTS
AT AMERICAN VILLAGE - The American Village in
cooperation with the Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts
of America will work cooperatively to provide Eagle Scout
Projects within the American Village Historic Site. The
scope of these projects will be limited to creating Historical
Markers for the various buildings located on the educational
campus. For more information, click here.
AT&T TO PROVIDE SCOUTING’S TOP
ACHIEVEMENTS – AT&T has agreed to underwrite the
cost of Arrow of Light awards, Eagle Scout Award kits, and
Venture Silver Awards for all Greater Alabama Council Scouts
and Ventures earning these awards during this (2008) calendar
year. For the Eagle Scout Award kits and Venture Silver
Award, this represents a savings of more than $25 to the
individual, family or unit. Unit leaders should contact
one of the council service centers at least one week prior to
the scheduled presentation date to obtain the necessary
awards. Shipping costs (if any) will be the
responsibility of the unit requesting the award. Individuals
or units who have already purchased any of these items this
year may contact a council service center for
reimbursement.

issue.

that time of year again when we welcome new Scouts, parents
and leaders into the Greater Alabama Council Scouting family.
It is everyone’s job to make each one of these individuals
feel welcome and appreciated. One important thing we can do to
insure a quality Scouting experience for our new family
members is to properly train our leaders. Fast Start
Training is now available at the BSA Online Learning Center.
This site provides access to online courses that may be taken
for credit by our members. You can also take the Youth,
Protection Training course here as well. It is strongly
advised that every registered adult leader be youth protection
trained. GET TRAINED TODAY!
ONLINE ADVANCEMENT - Use
Internet Advancement to record awards, ranks, and merit badges
to youth from any online location, including at home or at the
office. Internet Advancement allows you to register once
as a first time user and then to log in as a returning user to
submit ranks and awards for your unit members. If you are
using third party software, there is now an option to upload
your data into BSA’s Online Advancement! Submitting Reports is
EASY! Units set their own schedule for submitting reports. We
recommend submitting a report every month. Each December a
final report with anything not already recorded for the year
should be submitted before month end. Register to use Online Advancement TODAY!
ONLINE RECHARTERING - What are the
benefits of Internet Rechartering? The two key benefits
from using Internet Rechartering are more accurate member data
and renewals are validated against BSA membership rules before
submission. These benefits are two sides of the same coin.
When the unit does data entry for charter renewal this leads
to more accurate member data and ensures data integrity.
We are now approaching our rechartering season. Most of our
units will recharter during the months of November, December,
January and February. November units should be receiving their
recharter packets beginning in September, December in October,
January in November, February in December, etc. In your
recharter packet you should have your usern,, ame and pass
code to log on to the online rechartering site. If for some
reason you are unable to locate your units online recharter
information and require assistance, contact Penny Griffin at
